There are not many restaurants in the city that would risk dishing out only Afghani cuisine. On the contrary, not only does Bistro Grill n More, the Afghani cuisine restaurant at Mulund, serve food from the Frontier but it also goes ahead and adds a few interesting twists to the menu.
Ambience: The setting of the restaurant is pretty comfortable and basic with an inner area for those who want to smoke the hukka and an outer, smoke-free area. A shimmery, beady curtain keeps the mall strollers out of view. The music at the restaurant, however, does very little to enhance the ambience.
On the menu: The menu at this place is quite expansive ranging from salads to sizzlers to special milkshakes. We tried the Moutabbal (Rs 79), which is an interesting combination of eggplant dip and sesame dip served with Afghani bread. For the non-vegetarian starters, we decided to try their speciality grills. The Shish Tawook (Rs 219), chicken pieces in an Afghani "enigmatic aroma" and grilled on skewers, came to the table straight from the grill, with the pieces still attached to the skewer. The masala of the Tawook did manage to tingle the tastebuds but the chicken could've been more tender. From the drinks menu, we tried the tequila-based Ice Breaker (Rs 319), which was too sweet for us to handle, and Chocolatini (Rs 249), a Bailey's, Vodka, chocolate liqueur combination, that went well with the food.
For main course, the waiter suggested we try Kapsa Rubyan (Rs 319), which is basically prawn biryani but with a royal Afghani twist. The Afghani masalas used in the Biryani, along with the fact that the rice and meat blended so well together, made it one of the best biryanis we've ever tasted in this city. The Khudra Mashwa (Rs 299), or vegetarian sizzler, came on a platter much smaller than what is normally seen in restaurants, but did not give us any reason to complain in the taste department.
Service: The staff at this restaurant, unlike most other places, knows its menu. Our waiter insisted we try the prawn biryani despite our apprehension, and we were glad we paid heed.
