Now you would not like to be caught in the act, at least on road or a public place. The new Delhi Excise Act has increased the fine for public consumption of alcohol from Rs 200 to Rs 5,000. If the offender is caught while creating nuisance then he would have to pay a fine of Rs 10,000 and serve a three-month jail term also.

The new legislation came into force on Monday. The age of employment for men in places where liquor is served has been reduced from 25 years to 21 years and restriction of employment of women has been done away with.
However, Excise Minister AK Walia said the age at which people can buy liquor remains at 25. The Act also provides for very strict punishment for those involved in mixing noxious drug or ingredient in liquor. If as a result of such an act death is caused, then the offender may face death sentence or life imprisonment along with a penalty of up to Rs 10 lakh. It has extended the prohibited area near religious places and schools from 75 metres to 100 metres.
