Group of women to start campaign against attacks
A group of women, calling themselves Fearless Karnataka, have decided not to take the recent attacks against them lying down.
The new group submitted a memorandum to the police commissioner yesterday, urging him to step up security for women in Bangalore.u00a0 They said what made the attacks worse was that they took place during the day and in full public view.
On the 7th of this month, the women will march to the state police chief's office and bring to his notice the plight of women in Bangalore.
On March 8, which is also International Women's Day, they will begin a campaign called Take Back our Night by walking through the streets at night and occupying public spaces such as busstands, shopping malls and theatres. Posters will urge the public to participate and take action.
Taking note of the spate of attacks, Vimochana, an NGO, the Alternate Law Firm and the People's Union for Civil Liberties have set up a fact-finding team. The team found that at least 50 attacks against women were reported in the last 18 months.
Recent complaints
A woman was attacked in Indiranagar between 1 and 1.30 pm. Goons on a motorcycle chased her and shouted obscenities before punching her.
Four men tried to pull off a woman's clothes in Koramangala. They screamed saying she was a Pink Chaddi campaigner before fleeing from the scene.u00a0 Police say it's not sure whether the cases reported recently have anything to do with moral policing or whether they are merely instances of eve-teasing.
