As per rules, doctors attached with civic and government hospitals have to be present in the premises between 9 am to 4 pm. However, it was found that despite circulars and memos that were sent to all the professors in the Parel hospital, five of them had a poor attendance record.
Dr Shubhangi Parkar, acting dean of the hospital, said, “We are in the process of consulting higher authorities and holding aninquiry against these doctors. We will initiate action against them soon.”
“The doctors are from different departments and one of them is the head of his department. We have issued clear and strict circulars and instructions to all doctors to be present in the hospital till 4pm and I have personally been keeping an eye on those who have been under the scanner,” added Dr Parkar.
She further said that professors from the surgery, orthopaedics and other such super specialty departments had the worst attendance record while those from the paediatrics and gynaecology department were the best in terms of attendance.
In the past, too, action has been taken against doctors who flouted norms. For instance, a doctor from Sion hospital was denied his allowance. As per BMC guidelines, doctors working with civic hospitals are not allowed to avail the non-practice allowance, which is compensation for not doing private practice.u00a0
