What can be better than tea cakes and hot chocolate in a cozy garage turned bakery called Happy Belly Bakes

Located in a quaint residential area in the city, Happy Belly Bakes is a small garage turned into a welcoming space with a heavy baking whiff hanging in the air. One look at the eatery and you will know that it can be an ideal place to spend a lazy Sunday evening with family or friends. As we seated ourselves on comfortable cane chairs, the smell of freshly baked cakes not only tantalized our noses but also instigated our hunger pangs. We decided not to waste any more time but look through the menu, which turned out to be a short and sweet one offering quiches, pastries, chocolates and beverages.

We picked the Utterly Butterly Delicious Teacake (Rs 60) and Whisky Fudge Cake (Rs 80). The Butterfly Teacake tied with a red ribbon and sprinkled with sugar on top tasted very buttery. Tasting like soft, fresh baked bread smeared with butter, this teacake is ideal for all those who love home- baked ones. A chocolate lover's delight, the Whisky Fudge Cake on the other hand, was a gooey lump of chocolate covered with a blob of butterscotch and chocolate cream pastry embedded in it. Spongy and chocolatey, the cake was, however, a tad too sweet.

Realizing that our sweet tooth was sufficiently pampered, we turned our attention to the Chicken Olive Quiche (Rs 65) and Potato Quiche (Rs 65). The chicken quiche turned out to be a tasty mix of cheese, black olives and chicken pieces in a pastry crust while the potato quiche with cheese, mashed potatoes and finely chopped onions is a perfect snack for your child. After a round of sweet and savoury, our parched throats wanted something to quench our thirst and we decided to comply. The Hot Chocolate (Rs 40), which Happy Belly promised to be a treat, however, turned out to be a bit disappointing. Tasting more like some children's energy drink in hot water, our beverage lacked the smooth dark, chocolate milky touch.

But as the saying goes, "All's well that ends well," our snack ended with some really mouth-watering homemade chocolates. Priced at Rs 15 each, we ordered an Oreo Truffle, a Date and Walnut Truffle and an Almond Rock. While the Oreo Truffle was a lump of dark chocolate with a chewy brownie inside, the Almond Rock had almonds dipped in chocolate with a nutty crunch and a tinge of chocolate.

However, the Date and Walnut truffle is one drink we would like to recommend, a date flavoured dark chocolate crust with bits of dates and walnuts on it; with the truffle lending a balanced fruity and chocolatey flavour, leaving our bellies feeling quite happy.

Also, if you're looking for some designer cakes (Rs 500), HBB can whip up some in flavours like rum, walnut, black forest and more. So, the next time you want to order some home baked stuff for a party, you know where to call.
