Two Nigdi residents had a narrow escape when the BMW they were driving, got trapped in the riverbed of Panchganga last night. While the duo managed to get out in the nick of time, the car was fished out two hours later.
According to the police, Surendra Gururaj Rao, 50, and his friend, Vijay Sarawade, were heading to Pune from Panhala, Kolhapur, in their BMW when they realised that the road ahead had been shut due to a flood-like situation in the vicinity. They drove back and used another road, but their car got washed away by the floodwaters and landed in a river.
The quick-thinking duo immediately got out of the car, swam to safety and alerted the Kolhapur police.
A police team and the disaster prevention cell rushed to the site with a boat and a tractor. The car, which had sunk into the river, was retrieved after a two-hour-long operation. Rao and Sarwade were admitted to the nearby CPR Hospital, where they are receiving treatment for their injuries.
