Don't ride on pavements

Footpaths are meant for pedestrians and not for two-wheeler riders. Offenders better be careful henceforth, as the traffic police may take away your licence.

The drive was initiated following the rise in the incidents of motorists encroaching upon the footpaths posing a threat to the pedestrians. "The city already lacks adequate footpaths and encroaching upon whatever little space is available not only leads to accidents but also amounts to traffic violations," said K Srinivasa, deputy commissioner of police (traffic, east).u00a0

Move welcomed

Welcoming the move, traffic expert M N Srihari said. "Just as roads are meant for traffic, footpaths are exclusively meant for pedestrians. Riding on the footpaths is not only a traffic violation, but it also violates the Supreme Court directive."u00a0

According to him, the Supreme Court in a recent directive asked authorities to make the footpaths more user-friendly as it was also being used by physically challenged people, children and elderly citizens.

"The city already lacks safe footpaths as they are encroached upon by hawkers, and two-wheeler riders," Srihari said.

Complaints

The police have also requested public to email their complaints to dcptre@gmail.com or fax 22860787 or phone 22942346 to inform about such violations.
