Health authorities take AAI's help to find all the people who came in contact with Pune's first swine flu patient who travelled extensively after contracting the disease

Health authorities who are monitoring the condition of the first confirmed swine flu patient in Pune are having a hard time tracing people he may have come in contact with, as he had travelled extensively in India and abroad after contracting the disease. Now, they have taken help from the Airport Authority of India (AAI) to trace passengers who sat around him in the flights.

However, authorities at the Dr Naidu Hospital of Infectious Diseases, where he is admitted since Saturday, refused to give the name of the 24-year-old IT engineer.

According to the hospital's patient information chart, the techie, who was staying in Kothrud, had travelled from Philadelphia to London (Heathrow) on June 13 and then flew to Mumbai. He also visited Delhi and his native place in Lucknow, before reaching Pune on June 19.

Doctors fear that many others may have contracted the disease. Dr R R Katti, deputy director of Health Services and coordinating member of H1N1 Influenza control team said, "We're trying to trace the people who came in his contact during the seven days before he experienced the flu symptoms on June 15."

He added, "We will identify passengers who sat two rows ahead and behind his seat on the various flights with the help of AAI."

"My friend informed me about the symptoms over the phone. His parents in Lucknow have been informed. He's healthy and there is nothing to worry," said Ashish Govandi, the patient's friend. He is being treated to a dose of anti-viral Tami flu tablets.
