Rains fuelled road mishaps in the Capital

Delhi's roads could never be termed safe. Now, thanks to the Commonwealth Games and incessant rains, street-smart Delhiites are going through a rough ride. On Tuesday one person was killed and four suffered injuries in separate incidents of road mishaps.

REPRESENTATIBVE PIC

A 26-year-old sales executive was allegedly run over by a speeding Tata 407 goods carrier in northeast Delhi's Shastri Park area on Tuesday evening, police said.

"The incident was reported at 1:30 pm and the victim has been identified as Ravi Kumar," said a senior police officer. Police said Kumar was ferrying his cousin Malti, 16, and Shalu from Victoria Girls' Senior Secondary School to his residence in new Usmanpur when the incident occurred.

"The goods carrier rammed into the motorcycle from behind and crushed both Ravi and Malti. The vehicle lost balance on the slippery road," the officer said.

Ravi was rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital where he was declared brought dead by doctors while Malti was admitted to St Stephen's Hospital in north Delhi in a critical condition. Shalu was admitted to LNJP hospital.
"The driver of the vehicle was later identified as Munesh and he has been arrested. We have registered a case of hit and run at the Shastri Park Police Station," the officer added.

In another incident, three allegedly drunken youths rammed their car into three vehicles leaving three people injured in Pandav Nagar area of east Delhi at around 11 pm.

The car first collided with a motorbike. The rider was critically injured. Then the vehicle rammed into two cars and then hit a street light. Three people identified as Riyaz, Rajkumar and Lalu were injured.
The trio reportedly created nuisance in the area and also slapped some rickshaw pullers. All of them fled from the spot after the accident.

A 16-year-old boy was hit by a speeding Tata-407 mini truck early on Tuesday morning in Okhla. According to the police, the incident took place at around 5.45 am near the NSI bus stop as the victim was walking towards his home.

Hit-and-run
In a case of hit and run, a 27-year-old man was crushed to death while two others suffered severe injuries when a speeding Santro car hit them from behind in Hari Nagar area of west Delhi late on Monday night. The incident took place near the DTC depot in the area. A senior police officer said no one could not note down the number of the Santro car.

Killer wheels
In yet another case of hit-and-run a car mowed down a 30-year-old MCD employee after hitting his scooter from behind. The incident took place near Shakarpur in east Delhi.
The deceased was identified as Rajender, a native of Hissar in Haryana. He was returning home from work when he met with the accident. The accused driver fled from the spot in his car while Rajender was rushed to Bali Nursing Home in Laxmi Nagar where he succumbed to his injuries during the course of treatment.
