The city experienced its hottest day of the month yesterday with temperatures soaring to 38.1 degrees Celsius.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the temperature was almost same or higher than other parts of the state.

In comparison, Solapur and Sangli recorded 39 degrees C and 37 degrees C, respectively.

Department officials said since there has been less moisture in the land and as temperatures are above normal in the state as well as in neighbouring states, the mercury might continue to rise for the next 48 hours, resulting in a heat wave.

The highest temperature recorded in the city in the month of March was in 2004, when the mercury almost reached 40 degrees C.

"Conditions are almost the same in other parts of the state as dry weather with less moisture in the air is causing extensive heating," said an IMD official.

The department says it is normal as the city has been experiencing such drastic weather during the month of March since the past two years. Even Mumbai till date has not recorded more than 31 degrees C in any March.

For the next 24 hours, the maximum temperatures in the city are expected to remain at 38 degrees C, while the minimum will be 15 degrees C.u00a0
