Smart Art is full of paradoxes. On one page, you find a Warholian version of Marilyn Monroe smiling mysteriously at you. A click away, Winnie the Pooh sits smug, circled by his friends. And then there's an oh-so-perfect Audrey Hepburn on the next page.
Eleven month-old webstore, smartart.in has an extensive collection of art, music, movie, photography, sports and pop art images. The brainchild of ex-adman Derek Affonso, Smart Art delivers posters and art prints within a fortnight for prices that begin as low as Rs 600. "When my wife and I were doing up our daughter's room, we realised that there was a dearth of avenues in the Indian market from where we could source posters," says Affonso, who is happy to help you personalise your shopping to suit your decor, by customising size and print.u00a0
Art and photography
On March 30 1987, Van Gogh's Irises was sold for a record $53.9 million at Sotheby's in New York. It's unlikely that you will ever manage to have this one hang on your walls. But at Smart Art, you can pick up a copy for merely Rs 1,650. The Fine Art print helps reproduce the beauty of the colours used in the originals. Better still are canvas prints where images are digitally printed directly onto canvas. Picasso, Klimt and Michelangelo sit beside lesser-known European artists who make it to Affonso's assortment. Don't miss the link to the Limited Edition collection. You may not recognise names here, but these are individually signed and numbered by artists themselves. We were disappointed to see the absence of an Indian name, though.
Movies and Music
Imagine a giant, insolent tongue mocking all those unwanted guests who hog your dining table over weekends.
The Rolling Stones logo is just one from several music images that are up on the site. Smart Art compiles popular faces from all genres of music. So there's a 50 Cent, a Pussycat Dolls, a Metallica, an Elvis, an Amy Winehouse, and a BB King poster in the same gallery. We loved the all-inclusive nature of the Movies collection.
World cinema lovers can revel in La Notte and Bergman, while mainstream cinema buffs can watch Marlon Brando puff a cigar.
Pop Art
Che Guevara, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley, all pop culture icons, find place of honour here. Other images might not strike a chord but the varied Andy Warhol images are worth checking out.u00a0
