Alliance Francaise brings French Jazz group Sam Smala to Mumbai to create an enchanting evening of world, funk and gypsy jazz
This seems like quite an enviable family plan, where music abounds and keeps all at the table in good cheer.
At the head of the table is monsieur Manouche, Samuel Strouk, founder of Sam Smala, a new French jazz band that's touring India this season.
'Smala' means 'family', and Strouk thought the term fitted his endearing 5-member-band when it was set up two years ago. Theirs is a unique French jazz style called Manouche; gypsy jazz music.
In fact, Strouk doesn't care about being listed under a genre. For the band, it's about exploring the globe to find inspiration that will inspire Mathias Levy (violin), Vincent Peirani (accordion) and Guillaume Marin (bass).
Sam Smala's tunes are evocative of Paris, Havana, Istanbul, New York, and now, India.

"We are planning a fusion display of funk and pop this time in Mumbai," says Strouk in a telephonic interview.
"Mumbai has an audience that's loving and enthusiastic about music, so it's a pleasure playing in the city."
This season's tour sees them team up with various Indian flautists and percussionists to add a local flavour to their performances.
