The 15-day programme is aimed at sharing ways of riding safely and educating people about the importance of taking precautions while driving in the city or on the highway. “More than 500 members of the bikers’ group participated in the rally on Independence Day. We’ve decided to carry out a special programme to create awareness amongst masses and would try to reach out to as many people as possible,” said Sangram Devkar, president of Pune bikers’ group.

“We are planning to talk to employees of the IT sector and college students about safety tips they can follow, like wearing shoes while driving, using helmet at all times, not listening to music, rear-view mirrors, etc. Many youngsters who like to drive outside the city would be educated about wearing jacket and kneepads, and observing highway traffic and lane rules. We hope to create a positive impact on people and believe this will help bring down the number of road mishaps,” he added.

Anil Valiv, deputy regional transport officer, who is in charge of the ‘Street Sense’ programme, said, “Most of the times, it is our own mistakes that cause road accidents. It is important for today’s youth to be aware about the importance of driving safely. Awareness is the key to reduce the number of road accidents and we have to work together to educate people about it.”
