An RTO flying squad from Panvel comprising of two inspectors and a driver had gone to Nanded to take action against overloaded heavy vehicles, but was attacked by a mob of unknown people.

RTO inspector Vijay Sawant was injured in the attack and admitted to a private hospital in Nanded. “Another inspector, Sunil Kshirsagar, sustained minor injuries,” Deputy RTO Sanjay Dhaygude said. “Both are out of danger now. We have lodged complaints, but the culprits haven’t been identified yet.”

A senior transport officer said: “Many overloaded heavy vehicles used to get away by giving bribes regularly, so some days ago the Transport Commissioner announced what is called cross-action against these heavy vehicles, which means squads will take action in cities other than those that fall in their own jurisdiction.

That’s why a squad from Panvel went to Nanded. It was not possible to bribe a squad from another city because its members are unknown till the action takes place. So, to threaten the RTO, the heavy vehicle transporters attacked the squad.” u00a0After the thrashing of the squad in Nanded, employees and the officers’ association of RTOs from all over the state demanded strong and immediate action. u00a0
