Admissions to stay open till RTE quota is filled

In a bid to encourage higher participation and ensure that all the 25 per cent seats reserved for students belonging to the economically weaker sections (EWS) are taken up, the education department has said that schools will continue the admission process till all the seats are filled. This means that the schools can continue accepting admissions beyond June 14, the deadline for submission of forms.

A senior education official from South Mumbai zone said requesting anonymity, “Parents can collect and submit the admission forms till June 14. But schools that are unable to fill all the reserved seats will continue the admission process beyond this date, till all the reserved seats are filled.”

Admission forms will be available for distribution starting May 15. Under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 25 per cent seats in aided schools have to be reserved for students belonging to the EWS. The state is required to provide for all their academic needs.

Raj Aloni, principal of Ramsheth Thakur Public School in Kharghar, said, “We are waiting for parents to approach us. There are about 40 reserved seats in our school. We have received applications from only four students so far.”
