Accident claims student's life on her birthday

A 22-year-old engineering student, Soumya R, was killed in a road accident on her birthday on Monday. She was on her way to get her driving licence from the Regional Transport Office.

Soumya was in a jubilant mood as she had secured an IT job, having got the confirmation just a few hours before the mishap.

A seventh semester student in the BM Shrinivasaih Institute of Technology, Yelahanka, Soumya collided head-on with a Tata Sumo near Puttenahalli Lake and died on the way to the hospital.

The Tata Sumo was going to Doddaballapur carrying some employees of a private company. The driver lost control and rammed the Scooty Soumya was riding.

Traffic Police Inspector Ashok Kumar said, "We can't imagine how an accident happened at the spot because there is no chance of this kind of a head-on collusion there. We have no record of such accidents at the spot in the past."

Soumya was severely injured and was taken to M S Ramaiah hospital but was declared brought dead.

Soumya was a meritorious student and had secured 81 per cent marks in her previous semester; she was waiting for the remaining six months to her graduation to get over even as she was elated at having got a job in leading software firm CTS Information Technology.

She was also very happy that day because her brother was all set to come back from the United States, where he is working as an engineer in Tata Company.

Just before her accident she had spoken to her friends and they had talked about her performance in academic and other fields.

Some of her friends had even asked her for a treat and she had agreed.

But that was not to be.

After the accident, the body was kept in the M S Ramaih hospital mortuary and her parents are waiting for their son to return from the US.

The Yelahanka police have arrested the driver of the Tata Sumo and seized the vehicle. The investigation is on.
