A. Raja misled Manmohan Singh on 2G case: CBI

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday told a court in New Delhi that former telecom minister A. Raja misled former prime minister Manmohan Singh on policy matters related to 2G spectrum allocation while commencing final arguments in the case.

Special public prosecutor Anand Grover told CBI Special Judge O. P. Saini that Raja misled Manmohan Singh on first-come-first-serve (FCFS) policy and cut off dates by referring the letters written by then telecom minister on November 2, 2007, to the former prime minister.

Grover added that FCFS policy was deliberately changed by Raja.

He added that cut-off date for receiving applications by the companies for grant of 2G licences was also changed to favour particularly Unitech Wireless (Tamil Nadu) Ltd.

Grover argued that Raja had granted spectrum to 'ineligible' companies such as Swan Telecom Pvt. Ltd. (STPL) and Unitech Wireless (Tamil Nadu) Ltd.

The final arguments in the case that began on Wednesday will be now heard on May 25, the next date of hearing.

The case pertains to the 2G spectrum allocation in which Raja, DMK MP Kanimozhi and others are facing trial.

According to the CBI, A. Raja was biased in allocating 2G mobile airwaves and operating licences to telecom firms, causing a huge loss to the state exchequer.

The court framed charges on October 22, 2011, against 14 accused and three companies under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevent ion of Corruption Act.

All the accused, including Raja, are out on bail.
