A cakewalk for burglars

The house was empty and the keys to a treasure trove were dangling from the keyhole. What more can a thief ask for?

Burglars had it easy at the house of a senior vice-president of Hewlett-Packard. All they had to do was break open the front door and help themselves to valuables worth Rs 40 lakh from a cupboard that had the key in the keyhole.

The burglary took place in Koramangala 4th Block when Sridhar's wife, Pushpa, and 19-year-old-son had gone to visit relatives from 1 pm to 10 pm on Tuesday. He was away in Chennai. When they returned at night, they saw the cupboard open and the jewellery gone. Sridhar returned yesterday andu00a0 filed a complaint.

"The burglars did not have much to do since only the main door was locked. They broke the main lock and seemed to have gone straight to the first floor. There they found the keys hanging from the cupboard keyhole itself. They opened it and made away with jewellery worth Rs 40 lakh," said police.

Police suspect the hand of a former employee or maid. "Nothing was ransacked. Nor was anything touched on the ground floor. The burglars seemed to know where the valuables were kept and went straight there," the police said.
