Officials forced Sulochana Shelatkar's son to hire an ambulance to ferry her to the MHADA office for a signature despite knowing about her ailing heart condition
Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) officials are in the dock for forcing a bedridden old woman to be present in office to complete formalities even after knowing about her ill health.

Sulochana Shelatkar (73), a resident of Rajkotwala building near Ganesh Talkies at Lalbaug, was shifted to transit camp (Pratiksha Nagar) when her building went in for reconstruction in 1986. Since then the Shelatkar family has been living in Pratiksha Nagar. They vacated the room this February. After a long wait for their home the Shelatkar family finished all legal formalities. Subodh Shelatkar (40), the son of Sulochana Shelatkar, approached MHADA for the key to their new home, but the request was turned down by officials. Finally, an official told Subodh that until he gets his mother to the (MHADA) office the key could not be handed over.
Subodh took his mother to the MHADA office at Shindewadi in Dadar (E) by ambulance on a stretcher. “I spent Rs 2,500 for the cardiac ambulance,” said Subodh. “I informed them about my mother’s condition. She is bedridden due to blockages in her heart. She cannot walk. But the official was very rude to me and denied my request about taking the paper home for my mother’s signature,” Subodh told MiD DAY. It’s been a month since the Shelatkar family surrendered their transit camp room to get into their new home.
Currently, Subodh, his mother and his family (wife and two daughters) are staying at his brother’s house in Antop Hill. Prasad Lad, chairman of the repair and reconstruction board (MHADA) and MHADA chief officer MK Thombare were not available for comment. An official on condition of anonymity said, “This is a sad case and will affect the popularity of MHADA officials.”u00a0
