B B Ashok Kumar's phone hasn't stopped ringing ever since he volunteered to donate blood to a 30-year-old man, attacked in a property dispute.

"Since Saturday, I have received more than 600 calls from people in Mysore, Kolar and Bangalore," said the Frazer Town ACP, shrugging off his good deed as "part of the job and nothing extraordinary".

Ashok Kumar said he was happy that his efforts had saved someone's life. Had it been 10 minutes late, survival would have been difficult.

The background

He said victim Sajjad Pasha, a businessman from Kolar, had given his car to a Shivajinagar-based car dealer for sale. Six months back, the car dealer, Naseeb, sold the car but gave only a paltry sum to Sajjad. This resulted in a fight after which Naseeb and his father, a BMTC employee, attacked Sajjad and his brothers with swords.

A severely-injured Sajjab was rushed to Bowring Hospital and later shifted to Mallya Hospital for further treatment.

When Sajjad was brought to the hospital at around 2 am, the doctors told the police to arrange for blood for the surgery.

Ashok Kumar had reached Mallya Hospital by then to take stock of the situation and came to know of the need for blood. "Luckily, my blood group matched with the victim and since time was running out, I volunteered," he recalled.

Sajjad's family are grateful to the police for saving his life. "We had a different perception of the police but our views have changed, I feel like saluting the police whenever I see them," Sajjad's brother, who was also injured in the attack, said.
