A 32-year-old constable attached to the Dehu Road police station committed suicide yesterday morning by hanging himself at his police quarters residence.u00a0Constable Dnyaneshwar Hanumantrao Shinde, the deceased, had joined the police force in 2003. He had been posted at the Dehu Road police station three years ago.

Saying he had some urgent work, Shinde asked the other three members of his family to go to the terrace for a while. He then locked the door from inside and hanged himself with a nylon rope from a ceiling hook.u00a0Sources said the police quarters where the family resided was close to the police station.u00a0

After a half-hour wait, Shinde's wife started calling out to him, asking him open the door since the children wanted to leave for school. Receiving no response, she broke open the door with the help of a few neighbours and found Shinde hanging from the ceiling.

According to Senior Police Inspector Ram Jadhav of the Dehu Road police station, Shinde was probably troubled by the death of his younger brother a few days ago.u00a0"Even his father had passed away and his mother was left alone, which we suspect led him into depression. It is, however, premature to arrive at any conclusion since the case is still under investigation," he said.u00a0

Shinde's body was taken to Yahswantrao Chavan Memorial (YCM) in Pimpri-Chinchwad, where the post-mortem was conducted. The body will be taken to his village Sakharwadi in Phaltan taluka of Satara district for the last rites.u00a0
