Two mishaps occur early in morning, harking back to two near-dawn fatal accidents on E-way 10 days ago

Three fatal accidents on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway over two days led to the loss of six lives and left at least 10 people injured. The accidents occurred yesterday and on Wednesday, barely 10 days since two near-dawn mishaps killed five people on the high-speed inter-city road.

Two of the latest accidents were early morning occurrences and involved moving vehicles ramming into stationary ones.

A truck crashed into a roadside rock near Khandala at 10.30 pm on Wednesday after its brakes failed and two people sleeping in the vehicle died on the spot. The driver and the cleaner managed to jump off the truck after realising there was a problem with the brakes. The deceased were identified as Kishor Waman Waghchaure (22) and Nitin Jagtap (32), both from Wai taluka in Satara district.

"The driver and the cleaner sustained minor injuries," said Police Sub-Inpector LV Bhosale of the Borghat traffic chowky under Khandala traffic division. "Two people sleeping on the narrow beds behind and above the driver's seat died."

Around 6.15 am on Wednesday, a speeding private tourist vehicle banged into a stationary truck at Aundhe bridge near Lonavala. Three people died and eight were injured in the accident.

Close shave
Besides these fatal accidents, there was also a case of a truck turning turtle yesterday. The truck was carrying sugar bags and its driver lost control when a tyre burst near Shirgaon at the 90 km mark.

The vehicle caught fire because of friction with the road and was completely burnt, but the driver and cleaner managed to jump off the vehicle in time, said the police.

Less than 10 days ago, on January 26 and 27, five people had died and eight were injured in two different accidents that took place because of cars speeding.
