Anoushka stalker threatened her with her sitar maestro father's ill health
Emotions and blackmail make a potentially dangerous cocktail and the man who allegedly tried to extort money from Anoushka Shankar daughter of sitar maestro Pt Ravi Shankar knew it too well.
It was not only some "private photographs" with which hacker Junaid Khan tried to threaten the music icon's daughter, but blackmailed her that if the photographs were made public, they would hurt her ailing father.
In an e-mail sent to Anoushka, Khan wrote that the photographs would hurt her father, who is a heart patient, the most in his bid to extort US$ 1,22,000.
Anoushka, who lives in the US, herself is a renowned sitar player and received worldwide recognition by her performances along with her legendary father.
The e-mail was revealed by the prosecution when Khan's bail plea came for hearing in a local Delhi court on Wednesday.
Khan was arrested on September 14 and is presently in judicial custody.
Khan, a Mumbai-based businessman, has allegedly hacked into the account of Anoushka and stole some private pictures of her. He was chargesheeted under sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act.
He had sought bail on the grounds that the "serious charges of extortion" were not levelled against him. The police had even failed to record the statement of complainant Anoushka, claiming that her complaint sent by an email was not sufficient because it was not attested by a notary and the Indian consulate in the US.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja, however, reserved order for today.
The case
According to the chargesheet, during inquiry, it was revealed that Junaid had sent an email to Anoushka, initially from Dubai, using an Airtel prepaid mobile connection subscribed by Khan. Later from Mumbai, he used a Tata broadband Internet connection to send threatening emails to Anoushka between May 11 and September 14 to demand USD 1,22,000 in lieu of her private photographs.
