Says US-based Indian designer Sanjana Jon, who has alleged that her jailed brother, Anand Jon, was not provided with any medical assistance for hours after he complained of severe pain

Once again Sanjana Jon has alleged that her fashion designer brother Anand Jon, who is behind the bars in a rape case, was tortured as he was left without medical attention at Rikers Island in New York City.

According to Sanjana, a designer herself, the jail administration did not care to address the complaint made by
Anand and left him unattended, in pain, for hours. "It was around 2 am on Monday when authorities from the US called up and told that Anand was in extreme pain. The jail authority did not attend to him till the shift was changed," said Sanjana, who has been fighting to get justice for her brother.

"My brother was left without any medical attention. This is inhuman and violation of human and civil rights. Even after the shift was changed, he was taken to a basic hospital and not even a specialty hospital, where it was found that he has stone in his kidney," Sanjana rued.

Although Sanjana is yet to get the medical report from the US, she is determined to take legal action. "As soon I get Anand's medical report, we are going to file a case with the human rights commission," Sanjana said. Sanjana is not alone in this fight. Even her friends have joined in by posting regular updates on social network sites and have also launched a dedicated websiteu00a0 (www.justiceforanandjon.com).

But they are still waiting for help from the Indian government. "Now I feel Indian jails are better than foreign ones. At least they are taken to the hospital when needed. We are looking for the support of the Indian government for our fight. We want them to intervene so that Anand is safe there," said Sanjana.

A justice trust for Anand
In October, friends and well-wishers of Anand Jon, sentenced in a United States' court to 59 years of prison for sexual assault, got together to launch the website 'www.justiceforanandjon.com'. "Anand is going to face a fresh trial at a New York court in December and we hope justice prevails," said Anand's mother Sashi Abraham. Launching the website, actor-director Suhasini Maniratnam spoke about the determination and dedication of Abraham.
