As drive kicks off in the city, K East Ward healthcare worker recalls the many days he’d spend at office to keep family safe

It was an emotional moment for healthcare worker Shankar Gosavi, from K East ward’s health department. “Even though I have been waiting since 10 am in the queue to get vaccinated and it is nearly two hours later now, this wait is nothing compared to the wait I had to endure during the peak of the pandemic.”

Gosavi said that, due to fear of infecting his family, he would stay at the BMC office and not go home for days. “I was never skeptical or had any doubts about getting vaccinated. It was only a matter of time and I am happy I managed it on the first day itself.”

Gosavi was among the many who was administered the vaccine at Cooper Hospital, including former Shiv Sena MLC and Health Minister Deepak Sawant and his wife Anita Sawant. While that raised eyebrows initially, the Sawants are doctors and so were cleared for inoculation.

The question it raised, however, was: were only practicing doctors included in the phase 1 of the registration process, or could any doctor—irrespective of status of practice—register? It was not an answer civic official had.

Sawant, said, “We would like to tell you all to not worry and take the vaccine as it is safe. I did not suffer any kind of reaction in the first half hour and it was a safe process throughout.”

Dr Pinakin Gujjar, Dean of the hospital said, “We are happy that the drive has been set in motion and our beneficiaries were from the hospital and also from the health posts nearby.”
