Students, parents raise concern over data-privacy, ask how could website show student details based on just the seat number

Website showing HSC results goes viral, board says it’s ‘a proxy one’

The website displayed the full name, seat number and division information but not the marks

Amid all the tension over the Maharashtra State Board results, a website link for the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) results went viral on Friday leading to a lot of confusion among students. While students could download marksheets, which were incomplete, the board denied such a possibility and said it might be a proxy website. However, students and parents have raised concerns over data-privacy, as how could the website show student details based on just the seat number.

Janhavi (name changed) was shocked when a website link for the Std XII results was being circulated in her social media circle of friends. “There was no news about the HSC results, and so we were shocked,” she said.

“On clicking the link I was asked to enter my seat number and mother’s name, which is usually how we get the results. After I did so, a marksheet appeared on screen, which had my full name, seat number and division information. The results had a pass remark at the end but the marks column was empty. That is when I understood that it was a scam. But this is wrong on so many levels,” she added.

“This is creating a lot of confusion but the bigger concern is of data privacy. If the Maharashtra State Board is denying any affiliation to the website, then how was it possible that the seat number led to other details of a student. This information should be there either with the respective school or board,” shared a parent.

Adding to this, another parent said, “How can we be assured that data is safe? Already the state board website is full of glitches. There seems to be some major issue with the state board website, which is clearly putting students’ information in danger. It should take steps to stop such breaches.”

When contacted, Maharashtra State Board Chairman, Dinkar Patil said, “The state board will declare the date for the HSC results a day in advance as per the regular practice. This is some proxy website having no connection with the state board. Students should not believe in
such rumours.”
