Two sisters fall into Vaitarna river while taking selfie, die

Two sisters died after drowning in Vaitarna river while a taking selfie on Saturday evening. The deceased were identified as Santu Dasan, 15 and her sister Neela, 24. Two others who also fell in the river were rescued. All four are from the same family, officials said.


The incident took place at around 6 pm on Saturday when a group of four, all from the Dasan family had gone on to the Vaitarna jetty. While taking selfie from the corner of the jetty one of them slipped and fell into the river, since they had held each other while taking the photograph all fell in the river, said police.


After noticing the incident, the locals rushed for their help and rescued two of them- Basanit, 14 and Prema, 23, the former's sister-in-law with the help of ropes on the jetty, while the others two were stuck in the mud.

"As soon as we received the information, we rushed for their rescue and rescued two of them to safety using ropes," said Satish Gawad a local resident.

One of the local identified as Manjhi then pulled Santu from the mud. Later local police and fire brigade were called for the rescue operation they were joined by the railway workers working for the construction of railway bridge nearby. Hours later body of Neela was recovered from the river by the fire brigade officials, said police.

The incident took place in the jurisdiction of Mandvi police station which have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) and sent their bodies for post mortem. 

According to the police, the girl's father Gisusingh who runs a Vada Pav stall in Vaitarna hails from Rajasthan and has been staying in Vaitarna area for past 14 years.
