Traffic cop dragged on car bonnet for 20 km in Navi Mumbai; driver held for murder bid, drugs consumption

The incident took place in Vashi area at around 1.30 pm on Saturday when the 37-year-old police naik, Siddeshwar Mali, was on bandobast duty

In a shocking incident, a traffic policeman was dragged on a car's bonnet for around 14 km in Navi Mumbai town after he tried to stop the vehicle driver who had consumed drugs.


Vashi cops have booked the accused and will be produced in court on Sunday. 


On Saturday afternoon, Siddheshwar Mali (37), a traffic cop attached to the Vashi division, was posted at Blue Diamond Chowk. Around 1.30 pm, he saw a motorist jump the signal and dashed to a car but continued to drive. Mali along with Constable Shinde chased him. They managed to stop the motorist near Masala Market near APMC.

"When both the cops got down and asked the motorist to come out, he raced the car. Mali who was just in front of the car, jumped and got over the bonnet to save his life," said a cop from Vashi Police Station. 

"The motorist started driving the car and took it via Arenja Circle, Palm beach road till Gavhan phata," the police official said. 

Meanwhile, the subordinate of Constable Mali immediately informed Navi Mumbai Police control room. Finally, near Ulwe the motorist was stopped and nabbed. The motorist is identified as Aditya Bembde, a 22-year-old resident of Nerul. 

"The motorist was taken to medical and was found to be under the influence of ganja. He has been booked under IPC section 307 (attempt to murder) 353 ( Assault or criminal force to deter public servants from the discharge of his duty), 279 (rash driving) and relevant sections of the NDPS Act," Shashikant Chandekar, senior inspector of Vashi Police station, said.
