In a bid to promote cleanliness and hygiene, the Thane Municipal Corporation has embraced Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for the 'Swachhata Hi Seva' campaign. The campaign, which encourages citizens to actively participate in cleanliness efforts, is set to take place in every ward of the Thane Municipality area this Sunday, October 1st, 2023, at 10 a.m.

In a statement, Thane's Municipal Commissioner, Abhijit Bangar, Bangar explained that activity coordinators would determine the cleaning locations, considering the participation of citizens and public representatives. He stressed the importance of direct contact with public representatives, charities, and NGOs to ensure the success of the campaign. “The ultimate goal is to witness a tangible difference in cleanliness at the chosen locations.”

Commissioner Bangar emphasized that everyone should participate in the campaign with the same level of dedication as expected from sanitation workers. There will be no distinction between senior and junior participants, encouraging equality among all volunteers, he said.

The 'Swachhata Hi Seva' campaign aims to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi's principles and the importance of cleanliness. This year, on October 1 at 10 a.m., citizens across the nation will collectively offer 'Swachhanjali' (tribute) to Gandhi by participating in various cleanliness drives in their neighborhoods, parks, rivers, lakes, or any other public places.

The campaign calls upon citizens from all walks of life to engage in physical activities related to cleanliness in public spaces, including markets, railway tracks, tourist spots, religious places, and more. Government departments, social organizations, resident welfare associations, and private enterprises will actively participate in these cleanliness initiatives.

Thane Municipal Corporation has been preparing for the 'Swachhata Hi Seva' campaign, with guidance from Commissioner Bangar. The campaign is part of the larger 'Swachhta fortnight' observed from September 15th to October 2nd, 2023, and has already seen participation from over 5 crore citizens in various programs.

A significant turnout was recorded during a recent event at Dadoji Konddev Playground on September 17, where students, teachers, and cleaning staff came together for cleanliness-related activities. The event included placards conveying cleanliness messages, eco-friendly projects, Ganesha idol-making competitions, and a collective cleanliness oath.

In a heartening gesture, Thane Municipal Corporation honored Kanta Thakur and Anil Thakur, a couple working as cleaners in the city, during the event. This couple launched several beneficial schemes for sanitation workers, further reinforcing the campaign's mission.

The 'Swachhata Hi Seva' campaign is not only about cleanliness but also a collective tribute to Mahatma Gandhi's ideals, and Thane residents are eagerly gearing up to make a meaningful contribution to this noble cause.
