A 30-year-old man died and five persons were grievously hurt after an under-construction wall fell on them at Pelhar in Vasai East on Tuesday evening. The incident happened at a site where some persons were engaged in the construction of an illegal godown.

According to the officials, in the wall collapse that happened at Chaudhary Compund in Vakan Pada at Pelhar, labourer Dasrath Gopal Lahange, aged 30, was killed. The injured--Shailesh Shingada (19), Ramu Mage (25), Kalpesh Nadge (19), Bharat Dumada (19)--were admitted to Apex Hospital in Valiv. One among the five injured has not been identified yet.

Police officials said that the wall collapse incident happened around 5.30 pm on Tuesday at Chaudhary Compound. Labourers were engaged in the construction of godowns inside the compound which were illegal. Suddenly, a wall of one under-construction godown collapsed, trapping six persons under the debris.

Other labourers at the scene rushed to help and rescue the injured individuals; they rushed them to the hospital. Dashrath Lahange was taken to Platinum Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Much to everyone's dismay, the fire brigade arrived three hours after the incident was reported and were ill-equipped. Sources told mid-day that the fire brigade team arrived at the scene around 8 pm and due to inadequate lighting, they conducted the search operation using in-built flashlights in mobile phones. The civic officials too arrived at the scene very late in the night.
