On Wednesday, a man and a minor boy were killed while a woman was injured after a huge stone fell on their auto-rickshaw after a landslide amid heavy rains at Malshej Ghat in Maharashtra's Thane district.

According to the police officials, following the incident that took place on the Kalyan-Ahmednagar highway on Tuesday evening, traffic movement on the route was affected for some time.

Tokawade police station's inspector, Dinkar Chakor, told PTI that five members of a family were traveling in the autorickshaw from Mulund in neighboring Mumbai to Sangamner in Ahmednagar district.

A stone weighing 15-20 kg fell on the vehicle, he said. A man, identified as Rahul Baban Bhalerao (30), and his nephew Swayam Sachin Bhalerao (7) were killed, said assistant police inspector Lahu Tathe from Otur police station in neighboring Pune district.

As reported by PTI, a 55-year-old woman suffered serious injuries, the officials said.

Police and a rescue team rushed to the spot after being alerted and sent the bodies to a hospital for a post-mortem.

According to Tathe, the Otur police have filed a complaint on an accidental death, and as the incident took place under their jurisdiction, the matter will be sent to the Tokawade police station in Murbad.

As soon as the monsoon begins landslides are prone to happen in certain areas.

Earlier, on Monday, a landslide occurred in Haji Malang or Shri Malanggad in Ambernath, following the first rainfall of the season, which resulted in the death of a man. The incident injured two, and they are currently receiving treatment at Central Hospital in Ulhasnagar. The deceased, sources said, was attempting to save his son's life.

Ghulam Syed, aged 35, lost his life while saving his toddler, aged 1.5 years. His son and wife, Nabiya, had sustained serious injuries and were taken to Ulhasnagar Central Hospital for treatment. The family also lost their house in the landslide, which occurred around 7 am.

"The two injured are undergoing treatment at Central Hospital. We are investigating the matter of whether the house is authorized or unauthorised and will further take action accordingly," said a police officer.
