Police have registered a case against six persons for allegedly beating up a social worker, who is also head of a cobblers' association, and trying to extort money from him in Maharashtra's Thane city, an official told news agency PTI on Monday.

According to a complaint filed by Raju Chavan, president of the Maharashtra Rajya Gatai Charmakar Sanghatana, he was near the shoe stall of his brothers in Naupada area on Saturday night, the official from Naupada police station told PTI.
At that time, two of the accused - Shashi and Baba - arrived there with four other persons and allegedly threatened Chavan, he said.
The accused also allegedly beat him up and demanded Rs 5,000 as 'hafta' (protection money) if he wanted to continue his business in the area, as per the FIR, reported PTI.
Chavan, who was injured in the attack, was admitted to a government hospital, the official said.
The police on Sunday registered a case against the six accused under various Indian Penal Code sections, including for extortion, voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means, unlawful assembly and rioting, the official told PTI.
No arrest has been made so far, the police said, adding a probe was on into the case.
In another incident, a 38-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly killing her husband by beating him up and strangling him while he was in an inebriated state at a village in Maharashtra's Thane district, police told PTI on Sunday.
The police on Saturday arrested the accused Pranita Pravin More for the killing that took place on August 3 in Baneli village of Titwala town in Thane district, an official told PTI.
The victim Pravin More (49) was found dead in his house on August 3 and his body was sent for post-mortem, senior inspector Jitendra Thakur of the Kalyan taluka police told PTI.
While a case of accidental death was registered at the time, investigations revealed that the man had not died of natural causes, but was strangled, the official said.
Based on a complaint lodged by the victim's son, a case under section 302 (murder) of the IPC was registered against the accused and she was arrested, the official told PTI.
According to the police, the victim was an alcoholic and often quarreled with the accused, who was his second wife.
On the day of the incident, the man was in an inebriated state when the accused punched him and attacked him with a hard object before strangling him, the official told PTI.
