Owing to the tremendous response to the Covid-19 vaccine shown by them, senior citizens form 40 per cent of the chunk of Mumbai’s inoculated population. In addition, 93 per cent of the people who got vaccinated received the Covishield shot.

The inoculation of senior citizens and those aged 45 and above with comorbidities started on March 1. There are about 11,14,787 senior citizen beneficiaries inoculated till May 12. The total numbers of inoculations till May 12 are 27,86,048.

The age group of 45 to 59 years forms 35 per cent of the total inoculations with 9,79,604 beneficiaries and frontline workers and health workers are 13 per cent (3,54,622 beneficiaries) and 11 per cent (2,98,006 beneficiaries) respectively. The age group of 18 to 44 years, inoculated for 12 days before their vaccination came to a temporary halt, contribute one per cent at 39,029 beneficiaries.

No. of 2nd doses up

Weekly trends in the civic data show that senior citizens were sceptical about stepping out in April. It was only in the latter part of the month when cases started to dip that they emerged in large numbers for their second dose. The number of second doses between April 18 and May 11 is higher than that of first doses. Earlier, all weeks had more number of first doses. Of the total 7.88 lakh doses administered from April 18 to May 11, 4.26 lakh were second doses.

Of the 27 lakh people vaccinated, 25 lakh have been given Covishield, which is almost 93 per cent. Of the total, 18.69 lakh were inoculated in civic centres whereas 6.35 lakh inoculations have been done in private hospitals. The rest of the 2.55 lakh inoculations happened in centres run by central and state governments.

While the civic body aimed to inoculate one lakh citizens daily with 228 centres, the reality is far from it with daily numbers having reduced to below 30,000.
“The city has been hit by vaccine shortage and thus the drive for the age group of 18 to 44 years, too, has been halted. We have already invited an expression of interest to procure more vaccine doses and once we are in possession of it, our major issues of shortage should hopefully be resolved,” a civic official said.
