The MMRDA plans to pump over Rs 900 crore into a project aimed at permanently fixing the problem of potholes on the Eastern Express Highway (EEH) and Western Express Highway (WEH), sources told mid-day. They plan to make the city’s two main arterial routes of cement concrete.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has invited tenders for development and construction of “5 plus 5 Flexible Pavement to Rigid Pavement and Ancillary Works of WEH On EPC (Engineering, Construction and Procurement) Mode”. The estimated project cost for WEH is Rs 613.36 crore.

Tenders have also been invited for development and construction of “5 plus 5 Lanes of Rigid and Flexible Pavement from Sion Junction Mumbai to Golden Dyes Junction Majiwada Thane on EEH on EPC Engineering Construction and Procurement Mode”. The estimated project cost for EEH is Rs 473.03 crore.

Contractor for each project would have to complete the work in 30 months, and maintain the road for 10 years, which will include the defect liability period. Over 50,000 vehicles use the arterial EEH and WEH daily, and monsoon leaves potholes on the tar highways. The crater-filled roads cause traffic delays, wasting the time and fuel of commuters.

The WEH connects is a crucial connectivity between Bandra and Dahisar, while EEH connects Sion to Thane. Both the roads are under the jurisdiction of MMRDA, which is also responsible for the maintenance and repair.

“In order to provide a better commute to the motorists using the arterial EEH and WEH, the MMRDA will be carrying out the cement concretisation (CC) work of both the highways at an estimated cost of Rs 923 crore. The tenders for the same have been invited and due care will be taken to prevent traffic jams when the actual work begins,” an MMRDA official said.
