Palghar’s 42 Covid-19 deaths haunt ‘slowly healing’ MMR; Mumbai sees a dip in fatalities

Cases in Mumbai rose marginally for the second consecutive day, with the BMC recording 733 Covid-19 positive cases on Saturday. However, the city saw a dip in the number of fatalities, with 18 deaths being reported.


After recording the lowest daily Covid-19 numbers in the second wave on June 3, Mumbai saw a rise in Covid cases earlier last week, but the numbers remained below the 1,000 mark. The doubling rate has continued to significantly improve and is now at 633 days.


Of the 18 deaths in Mumbai, 11 patients had comorbidities, nine deaths were in the age group of 60 and above, while five deaths were reported in the 40-60 age group.  On June 8, the city had reported single-digit Covid-19 fatalities for the first time in the second wave.


The city’s recovery rate continues to be at 95 per cent with 732 recovering and being discharged on Friday.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) too, saw a marginal increase in new cases. The MMR region reported 2,267 cases on Saturday, including the ones reported in Mumbai. Thane had 114 new cases, while Kalyan-Dombivili reported 93 new cases on Friday and Navi Mumbai reported 67 new cases. With 42 deaths, Palghar recorded the highest Covid-19 fatalities in MMR.

Maharashtra saw a marginal drop in new cases on Saturday. As per the state report, 10,697 new cases were reported across the state. The state saw a marginal drop in Covid-19 fatalities, as there were 360 deaths reported across the state on Saturday.

The state’s case fatality rate has been seeing a steady rise and on Saturday it was 1.84 per cent.

Meanwhile, 70,461 people received their jab from private and government-run centres. Among them, 6,935 took their second dose. The private centres have administered the maximum number of doses. On Saturday, out of 58,629 beneficiaries at private centres, 49,897 were people between 18 to 44 years of age. Around 8.15 lakh people have received both doses up till now. Civic-run centres won’t be organising vaccinations on Sunday.
