Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, announced on Monday that the state's police force has been successful in reuniting over 35,000 missing children with their parents since 2015 through "Operation Muskan." Addressing the state assembly, Fadnavis highlighted the accomplishments of this initiative.

Fadnavis reported that in 2021, the Maharashtra police successfully brought back 96% of missing children, followed by 91% in 2022. For the current year, up until now, 71% of missing children have been reunited with their families. He also noted that "Operation Muskan," in operation since 2015, has received praise from the Parliament for its success.

"Operation Muskan," also referred to as "Operation Smile," is an initiative led by the Ministry of Home Affairs with the aim of rescuing and rehabilitating missing children. It allocates resources to state police forces to conduct the operation effectively.

Touching on other matters, Fadnavis addressed the issue of drug peddling in the state. He highlighted that the Maharashtra Police has adopted a preventive approach and zero tolerance towards crime. About 32,602 individuals have faced preventive action, and a Joint Task Force involving both Central and State governments is actively working to combat the drug issue in every district.

Discussing cybercrime challenges, Fadnavis informed the assembly that the State Government has established 43 cyber labs to combat cybercrimes. He emphasized the importance of addressing cybercrime in today's rapidly evolving landscape. A cyber intelligence unit is set to be established, and an integrated cyber platform is under construction to incorporate banks, social media, financial institutions, and non-banking financial companies (NBFCs).

Additionally, Fadnavis spoke about action against sand mafias, with around 1,566 arrests being made. He mentioned that strong measures like invoking the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) have been taken against these criminals.

Meanwhile, a local court Monday extended the police remand of Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable Chetan Singh till August 7 for allegedly shooting dead his senior colleague and three passengers on a moving train.

The Government Railway Police (GRP) sought the extension of his custody for seven days, saying they need to identify the witnesses and scan CCTV footage. The magistrate, however, granted Singh's custody to the police till August 11.

The GRP has added Indian Penal Code section 153-A, for promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, in the case against Singh. (With inputs from agencies)
