We are getting very little water, barely enough to cook,” said the over 700 Indian students stuck at Sumy, adding that they are not getting any help to evacuate. They added that the army personnel are not letting them leave the hostel. Speaking with mid-day, Hardi Patel, a medical student, said, “We haven’t bathed in so many days. There is no water at the hostel.”

Patel added, “Tankers come and give us a limited amount of water, which is not enough even to cook. We only have some rice, onion and potato that we are cooking. There is also no electricity. We are using a generator during the day, but that is shut by 7 pm, even amid this freezing temperature.”

Another student, Khyati Parmar, said, “We keep hearing blasts, bombings and firings. We generally stay in the room or the bunker. We have been living like this for the last 11 days and are scared that bombs will fall on us. Students from Kyiv and Kharkiv have managed to escape, but the army men standing on the road with guns are stopping us. Whenever anyone tries to go out, they send us back. The Indian embassy also told us to not leave Sumy, but we don’t know when we will be able to leave or if any help is coming.”
