Nine people were killed while a child miraculously escaped injured, in a fatal collision between a speeding truck and a van on the Mumbai-Goa National Highway in the wee hours of Thursday.


The deceased, including a girl child, are all relatives and residents of Hedvi taluka in Guhagar.


Police said the accident took place in Repoli village in Maharashtra’s Raigad district at around 4.45 am.

Acting swiftly, police reached the spot and with the help of the locals started rescue operation.

Somanath Gharge, Superintendent of Police, Raigad, said the truck bearing registration number MH-43 /U/ 7119 was on its way to Mumbai from Lotte MIDC while the Eco car bearing registration number MH-48 BT8673 was on its wayto Guhagar from Mumbai.

The police said that nine people including five men, three women and a girl child died on the spot. “A boy injured in the accident has been admitted to sub district Hospital, Mangaon for treatment.”

Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased were sent to a government hospital for post-mortem.

The cause of the accident was yet to be ascertained, the police said. (With inputs from PTI)
