The couple frequently fought over the man’s habitual drinking and addiction issues. On Sunday, after another such fight, the wife left for her mother's house. When the man went to bring her back, she refused to return with him. In a fit of rage, he demanded to take their daughter back with him. When his wife refused to comply, he threatened to harm the child if she did not return. Tragically, he followed through on his threat, resulting in the baby's death.
According to the police the couple is identified as Khushiram Thakur in his early 20s and Amruta Thakur, 20. Khushiram does labour work for a living. The couple married a year ago and had a daughter — Ruhi. The couple resided in Uran.
Binilal Budha Ram, 45, Amruta’s mother told police that her daughter and son-in-law would regularly fight after he got drunk. "Thakur would regularly drink, consume marijuana and assault my daughter. Recently after a fight, my daughter came to my house. Thakur came late Sunday night and started an argument with Amruta,” Binilal told the police. According to the police, when Thakur failed to convince his wife to return with him, he then demanded his child follow.
“He wanted to take Ruhi with him. We refused as he was not in the state to take her. However, he forcefully snatched his daughter and started arguing, telling Amruta to join him. When she refused he started threatening that he would smash his daughter on the floor. Before we could react he had thrown the infant on the floor leading to her injuries. We took Ruhi to hospital and informed the police," said Binilal.
The Uran police filed a case under section 308 of the Indian Penal Code. "The infant was being treated for her injuries at the hospital. But on Monday morning she passed away. We have invoked appropriate sections as the infant has died. The suspect has been arrested," said Rajendra Kote Patil, senior police inspector, Uran police station.
