Daily cases and deaths drop to 429 and two, respectively

Mumbai reported fewer than 500 Covid-19 cases for the fourth straight day, on Thursday. According to the BMC’s data, the city saw 429 fresh infections and two fatalities, a significant drop from the day before. On Wednesday, the city had registered 441 cases and nine deaths. The test positivity rate (TPR) fell to 1 per cent, for the first time this year. Both the deceased were senior citizens and had comorbidities. The total tally of novel Coronavirus infections in the country’s financial capital rose to 10,53,046, while the death toll reached 16,678.

“Ever since Mumbai’s Covid-19 positivity rate increased to touch 1 per cent on December 21, 2021, today, the TPR is back to one per cent again,” municipal commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal said in a statement. The city doesn’t have a single sealed building or containment zone (CZ) now, according to the BMC. The city had one sealed building until Wednesday.
83% patients asymptomatic
A total of 40,682 Covid-19 tests were conducted in the city in 24 hours, about 2,000 more than the day before, as per the BMC report. Around 83 per cent or 356 out of 429 patients detected on Thursday were asymptomatic. In the past 24 hours, only 71 patients were hospitalised and 20 of them were put on oxygen support.
With 822 patients discharged from hospitals during the day, the number of recovered cases in the city increased to 10,29,828. The city’s rate of recovery is 98 per cent, and the doubling rate has improved to 949 days. Presently, Mumbai has 3,698 active Covid-19 patients. Only 1,188 of the total 36,977 hospital beds are occupied in the city.
45 fresh fatalities in state
Maharashtra reported 6,248 new cases, 894 less than the day ago, the health department said. The virus claimed 45 more lives. The overall recovery count in the state grew to 76,12,233 after 18,942 patients were discharged during the day, leaving the state with 70,150 active cases. The Covid-19 fatality rate in the state is 1.83 per cent, while the recovery rate is 97.22 per cent. The state on Thursday also found 121 fresh cases of the Omicron variant of the virus, including 82 in Nagpur, 14 in Wardha, nine in Pune city, eight in Sindhudurg and two each in Dhule, Latur, Amravati and Yavatmal.
