State’s daily tally hits 2,172 as MMR sees 77 per cent rise in cases

Tuesday witnessed an almost 70 per cent increase in fresh Covid cases in the city at 1,377 compared to Monday’s 809. With this, the test positivity rate jumped to 4.25 per cent. However, the doubling rate continued to decrease and was 841 days on Tuesday. An increase in fresh infections in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) to 1,680 pushed up the state’s number to 2,172.


The city registered 1,377 cases after 32,369 tests were conducted on Tuesday. On Monday, the city had reported 809 new cases after conducting 43,383 tests, and had a TPR of 1.86 per cent. The lowest TPR of the second wave was 0.28 per cent on December 1.

The virus claimed one life on Tuesday. The patient had comorbidities and was in the 40 to 60 years age group. The city’s recovery rate remained constant at 97 per cent as 338 people were discharged after full recovery. The doubling rate continues to see a drop and was 841 days. The city had a doubling rate of 2,563 days on December 14. 

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), excluding Mumbai, also witnessed an upward trend in terms of fresh cases. As per state numbers, 1,680 cases were reported in the MMR, including the ones from Mumbai. Apart from Mumbai, Navi Mumbai reported 96 fresh cases, followed by 76 in Thane city. While Mira Bhayandar reported 33 cases, Panvel saw 29 cases, Vasai-Virar reported 26 cases each, Raigad recorded 11 cases and Kalyan-Dombivli reported 32 cases. The MMR, excluding Mumbai, registered four deaths, one each in Thane district, Palghar, Vasai-Virar and Raigad. 

As the MMR saw a 77 per cent increase in cases compared to Monday, the state’s tally also went up. As per the state health department’s report, 2,172 cases and 22 deaths were reported across Maharashtra. Apart from cities in MMR, Pune city registered 175 cases. The state’s case-fatality rate remained constant at 2.12 per cent as 1,098 people were discharged after full recovery on Tuesday. The state has 11,492 active cases.
