Worrying upward trend of past few days continues; MMR clocks 821 cases

From 336 to 490 to 602 daily cases: this has been the course of Covid in Mumbai for three consecutive days, ringing alarm bells. On Thursday, the city’s test positivity rate jumped to 1.52 per cent. Covid claimed one life in the city on Thursday. The state’s Omicron count stood at 88.


As per the BMC, the person who died of Covid on Thursday had comorbidities and was above the age of 60.  The state saw a marginal drop in new cases but a rise in Covid-19 fatalities. As per the state health department, 1,179 fresh cases were reported along with 17 deaths across Maharashtra.


The state’s case fatality rate remained constant at 2.12 per cent as 615 recovered and got discharged on Thursday. Currently the state has 7,897 active cases.  The Mumbai Metropolitan Region too  saw a significant rise in new cases. As per state data, 821 cases were reported in MMR, including Mumbai.

Apart from Mumbai, Navi Mumbai reported the most number of daily cases in MMR region at 53. It was followed by 47 cases under the Thane Municipal Corporation. While Panvel saw 20 cases, Vasai-Virar reported 29 cases each,  Raigad saw 14 cases and Kalyan-Dombivli reported 33 cases. MMR, excluding Mumbai, saw one death each in Panvel and Vasai-Virar.

State report 23 Omicron cases

The state on Thursday reported 23 cases of Omicron of which five were from Mumbai. It took the state’s total cases to 88, including Mumbai’s 36. Out of 88 patients, 42 cases have been discharged after a negative RT-PCR test, informed the state health official. Of Mumbai’s 36 cases, 19 patients have been discharged.

Health officials said an eight-year-old girl from Satara and a 17-year-old girl from Pune who are not vaccinated are among those who tested positive. Additionally, field surveillance of all international passengers who have arrived since November 1 is underway. Through airport and field surveillance, 551 samples have been sent for genomic sequencing. Results of 86 are awaited so far.
