The main construction of the new Carnac Bridge, located near Masjid railway station in Mumbai and connecting to P. D’Mello Road, has been successfully completed on June 10, 2025, as planned, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said on Tuesday.
The minor remaining works – including road markings, painting, street lights, and signboards – are in progress and expected to be completed by June 14, 2025. The bridge is now ready to be opened for full traffic use, the Mumbai civic body said.
On Tuesday, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar visited the site to inspect the construction. He was joined by Chief Engineer (Bridges) Uttam Shrote, Deputy Chief Engineer Rajesh Mule, and other officials, it said.
The Carnac Bridge is an important route for traffic movements in south Mumbai, especially for areas like CST, Masjid, Mohammed Ali Road, etc.
The old 125-year-old bridge was declared dangerous by Central Railway in August 2022 and was later dismantled.
To maintain east-west connectivity in the Masjid area, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) took charge of the rebuilding. The new bridge has been built as per the approved design by Central Railway, an official statement said.
Key highlights of the newly constructed bridge-
- Total length: 328 metres
- Railway section length: 70 metres
- Approach road (BMC limits): 230 metres (130m east, 100m west)
- Major components: Two steel girders weighing 550 metric tonnes each, supported on RCC piers
The heavy girders were carefully placed over railway tracks – a technically complex and risky task carried out under special blocks provided by the Central Railway. Expert guidance and planning were key to this success, the BMC statement said.
The bridge's eastern portion – from foundation to blacktopping – was completed in just four months, starting from 2 February 2025. Consultant firm RITES Ltd. has issued a Structural Stability Certificate for the bridge.
All major civil works such as RCC deck slabs, mastic layers, noise barriers, anti-crash barriers in railway areas, etc., are now completed.
BMC said that the load test for the bridge will be conducted on June 13, 2025. The results are expected by June 15, 2025. Based on the test report and consultation with VJTI experts and Mumbai Traffic Police, a final decision on opening the bridge for traffic will be made.
Abhijit Bangar said, "For the past two months, the bridges department worked around the clock, which made it possible to finish the main construction in record time. The goal, set back in November 2024, to finish by June 10 , 2025, has been achieved. The bridge is now ready to serve as a major east-west traffic route before the monsoon. Footpath work is completed, but some parts like the sleep road (slip road) and staircases will be completed after the rainy season."
