The Western Railway has announced the foundation stone laying of eight stations by the Prime Minister minister for the redevelopment of stations on the western line. The project, according to travel experts will cause inconvenience to passengers in the short term but will be a part of major convenience in the long run.

Niraj Verma, DRM Western Railway, while talking to Mid-Day said, "On February 26, 2024, Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will lay the Foundation Stone of 66 stations, spanning across six divisions of Western Railway. Being redeveloped at a cost of more than Rs 4,886 crore, 46 stations are spread across the state of Gujarat, while 11 are in Maharashtra and 9 in Madhya Pradesh. Indian Railways have identified 1,309 stations across the country for upgradation and modernisation under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS). Out of these 1,309 stations, 11 are in Maharashtra and eight are on the western line."

He added, "Out of 11 stations in Maharashtra, the foundation stone of eight suburban stations namely, Marine Lines, Charni Road, Grant Road, Lower Parel, Prabhadevi, Jogeshwari, Malad and Palghar stations will be undertaken at a cost of approx. Rs 233 crore."

"Additionally, provision of a 12m wide Foot Over Bridge has also been planned at Marine Lines, Charni Road, Grant Road, Lower Parel, Prabhadevi, Jogeshwari and Malad stations. The cost of this work is approx. Rs. 85.23 crore, which is included in the total cost of the above stations, i.e. Rs. 233 crore. These FOBs will serve as Roof Plaza with facilities such as suitable seating for passengers, retail kiosks, etc," the DRM said.

A. V. Shenoy, a travel expert with Mumbai Mobility Forum, told Mid-Day, "The redevelopment will cause some inconvenience to the passengers for the short term but the long-term results will be very much helpful for them (passengers).
