Mumbai: Worli-Sewri elevated connector likely to be finished in 18 months

Work underway at various points along the under-construction Worli Sewri Elevated Connector

If everything goes according to plan, the Worli Sewri Elevated Connector (WSEC) will be thrown open for traffic in 18 months. This connector will contribute to 15 per cent of vehicular traffic on the MTHL as it will provide direct and signal-free connectivity between the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), Bandra Worli Sea Link and the Coastal Road.

Talking to mid-day, Metropolitan Commissioner S V R Srinivas said, “The work on Worli Sewri Elevated Connector is progressing at a fast pace and to date, 24 per cent of the work has been completed.” While all major public infrastructure works in Mumbai are challenging, the project is especially complex as the alignment passes through congested areas including slums and cessed buildings. The elevated connector will also cross the monorail at one location.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which is the nodal agency for the project, awarded the contract for the construction of the 4.5-km elevated connector in the month of November 2020.

The connector is being constructed for traffic dispersion for the MTHL on the Mumbai side. The alignment of the Sewri-Worli link begins at the Sewri interchange section of the MTHL, crosses the Harbour railway line, the Acharya Donde Marg, the flyover at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Road, the Central Railway and Western Railway line at Elphinstone Road station, the flyover at Senapati Bapat Road, Jagannath Bhatankar Road, Kamgar Nagar, and Dr Annie Besant Road and ends at Narayan Hardikar Road in Worli.
