Day temperatures will rise across city; AQI to remain high as air still stagnant

The city has been recording “very poor” AQI for a couple of days now

After recording below 20 degrees Celsius for the last few weeks, the city’s Santa Cruz observatory recorded a minimum temperature of 22 degrees Celsius on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Colaba observatory recorded a minimum temperature of 23.6 degrees Celsius on Saturday.


The maximum temperature recorded in the city on Saturday was 32 degrees Celsius. According to an official of Indian Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Regional Meteorological Centre, Mumbai, the temperature might start dipping after next week. “The minimum temperature may see a slight rise in the coming days. For the next 24 to 48 hours, the city and suburbs will see mainly clear skies. The minimum temperature is likely to hover at 20 degrees Celsius and above,” the official said.

As per the weather outlook up to January 9 issued by Vagaries of Weather, a popular private weather blog in the city, the weather will be getting warmer overall. “Day temperatures rising over Mumbai. The city may see a maximum temperature of around 33-35 degrees Celsius, and Panvel, Karjat, and Navi Mumbai will get warmer with around 35-36 degrees Celsius till about Sunday -January 8. The temperature is likely to dip post-Sunday,” said Rajesh Kapadia of Vagaries of Weather.

Mumbai’s overall Air-Quality Index (AQI) continued to be in the “very poor” category yet again this week. Trend experts have hinted that this will continue till the end of this month. On Saturday, Mumbai (overall) recorded an AQI value of 304 (very poor) as per the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecast and Research (SAFAR) AQI monitoring stations.
