While students of most degree courses are appearing for their term exams, those aspiring for seats in professional courses such as engineering, MBA, law, etc. are still waiting for admissions, thanks to the delay in declaring results of the Common Entrance Test (CET). After the results are announced, the Common Admission Process (CAP) will be held to confirm admissions which is expected to take another month.

The Maharashtra CET Cell conducts multiple CETs which determine admission to various professional courses across the state.

This year, students had to wait for CETs as the state had  not given the go-ahead to conduct the same. The dates were finally announced last month and the tests were held from September 15 to October 5. The candidates are now waiting for results without which the centralised admissions process cannot begin. As a result, even as colleges have begun, first-year classes of different professional courses are yet to take off.

“We are already nearing November. Now, even if they declare results within a few days, the admissions process will take another month. This means we are not going to begin studies anytime before December. How are we expected to complete the entire academic year in the remaining time?” asked a concerned student.

Even colleges are in a fix as they are running with empty seats. Elaborating on this, a college principal said, “Many students waiting for admission to professional courses in the science stream such as engineering take a plan-B admission to regular science courses such in BSc. Once engineering admissions are done, they withdraw from regular science courses. This allows those on wait lists to join colleges of their choice. This is the cycle every academic year, which is hindered this year. Now, Mumbai University’s deadline to withdraw admission has also passed, so if any student wants to withdraw, they will not get a fee refund.”

While students and colleges await CET results, the state CET Cell is working on war footing to declare results by October 27-28. CET Cell Commissioner RS Jagtap said, “While result work for several courses is almost complete, we are waiting for clarity on MBA CET where few students have moved court |against the test. The court has ordered a stay on the process and the next hearing is on Monday. Declaring CET results is the priority now, so that CAP rounds for admissions can begin.”
