Mumbai: Vidhyavihar rail overbridge reaches crucial phase

The work over the railway line is now 90 per cent complete

The first phase of the girder launching for the Vidhyavihar rail overbridge was completed on Sunday night, marking a significant milestone in the project. The work over the railway line is now 90 per cent complete, and the full bridge construction is scheduled to be finished by the end of 2024.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had issued a work order for this bridge in May 2018. However, due to design changes and various technical challenges, the project faced delays. A BMC official initially projected completion by 2022 but explained, “Now we have completed the major bridge task.” Girder launching over the railway lines is particularly challenging, given that this bridge boasts the longest 100-metre girder. The first girder was launched on May 23, 2023, with the second girder launched on Sunday night. The second girder was positioned 78 metres further and is set to connect to the west side of Vidhyavihar, as two officials confirmed. The weight of each girder is 1100 tonnes.

Following the girder launch, the next step involves the construction of approach roads on both sides, which is anticipated to be finished by the end of 2024. As per BMC documents, the total length of the bridge is 630 metres with two lanes. The portion over the railway tracks is 24.30 metres wide and includes two-metre-wide walkways on both sides, while the approach roads are 17.50 metres wide with a 1-metre-wide walkway. The overall project is estimated to cost R178 crore.

A BMC official noted that this marks the first time in 30 years that the civic authority has constructed a railway overbridge in the eastern suburbs, with the last one built in the 1990s in Mulund. Speaking to the media, MP Manoj Kotak praised the diligent efforts of BMC’s engineers in completing the installation of the second girder just months after the first one.

He highlighted that the approaching roadworks on both sides of the bridge would soon be finalised, providing an additional travel option for residents in North East Mumbai to connect the east and west. Several prominent figures, including MLA Parag Shah, former corporator Bhalchandra Shirsat, Pravin Chedda, Deputy Municipal Commissioner Ulhas Mahale, Vijay Balamwar, chief engineer Sanjay Kondanyapure, and deputy chief engineer Vivek Kalyankar, were present during the girder launching event.
