Mumbai: Throat slit but Vile Parle man saved due to timely aid

The victim, Jalinder Memane, 42

The Vile Parle police have registered an FIR against unknown people after a man’s throat got slit by a manja while he was riding his bike. The police said the 42-year-old, Jalinder Memane, who works as a watchman had a narrow escape and timely treatment saved his life. The incident came to light on January 14 when the Vakola traffic division received a call about a man whose throat had been slit by a manja that had got tangled with the railing on the highway. By the time the police reached, locals had already taken the injured man to the hospital.

By the time the police reached the spot, locals had already arranged for a taxi to take the injured man—identified as Jalinder Memane, 42—to hospital. “We received a call that a manja had got tangled around a person’s neck on the Western Expressway. Since I was in the opposite direction, I took the help of a local biker to reach the spot. The locals had already arranged for a taxi and we took him to V N Desai Hospital without further delay. We also informed the Vile Parle police about the incident and traffic was cleared along the route,” said an officer posted with the Vakola traffic division.

According to the police, Memane was travelling on his two-wheeler on the Western Expressway when around 5 pm a stray manja got tangled around his neck as he reached the Setor Bridge. The manja slit his throat and he fell unconscious. He was then rushed to hospital. “Memane has told us that he was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident but we are verifying this claim,” said an officer.

A doctor from V N Desai Hospital said Memane was bleeding when he was brought in. “However, the cut was not that deep, so the bleeding stopped after applying bandages. After taking the opinion of doctors he was shifted to some other hospital.”

“We have registered an FIR against unknown people. Memane has been discharged and is currently recovering. We are investigating the matter,” said Renuka Buwa, senior PI, Vile Parle police. The case has been registered under Sections 338 (causing grievous hurt) and 188 (Disobedience) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Environment Protection Act, 1986.

Memane works as a watchman in the city while his family stays in Nashik. This is the second such incident within weeks. On December 24, 2023, Police Constable Sammer Jadhav, 38, lost his life after a manja got tangled around his throat.
