Wrapping up week-long work on extra line between Bandra and Goregaon, WR officials happy after running trials at 112 kmph
A new sixth line has been opened between Goregaon and Khar
Western Railway in Mumbai inaugurated a new rail track on Monday with a successful 112 kmph speed trial on the freshly opened sixth line, spanning from Khar to Goregaon stations. This addition of approximately 8.8 km to the city’s congested rail network promises to alleviate congestion, improve punctuality, and facilitate the addition of more train services. The segment from Goregaon to Borivli is targeted for completion by June 2024.

All cancelled and rescheduled services have been fully restored since November 6, according to railway authorities
Sumit Thakur, chief public relations officer of Western Railway, explained, “This project will enhance the line capacity of the Mumbai suburban section and will help to ease congestion, improve punctuality, and add more train services. Approximately 607 residents (Project Affected People or PAPs) were rehabilitated and provided with alternative allotments. Additionally, almost 1,000 trees were relocated and transplanted. The project commenced on October 7, 2023, and all cancelled and rescheduled services have been fully restored since November 6.”
He further said, “An independent connectivity to both the 5th and 6th lines has been provided to Bandra Terminus Yard through slewing of the existing 700m track and dismantling of five points, including a diamond crossing. The work entailed land acquisition of both private and government land (BMC). Moreover, 27 new foot overbridges have been upgraded and newly constructed in place of existing FOBs that infringed on the alignment. Furthermore, existing railway structures that obstructed the project were dismantled, and new structures were constructed in their place. This included the construction of new railway quarters of 192 new flats, six new electronic Interlocking (EI) buildings, two new traction substation (TSS) buildings, and three booking offices, among others.”
